Resource Wisdom

An example on how students innovate on resource wisdom at Innocamp.

According to Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, resource wisdom means the global societies being forced to become more efficient and cut emissions due to decrease in natural resources, population growth and climate change. To stay competitive globally, all actors should use resources wisely. "Investing in regional resource efficiency increases ecological sustainability, but the benefits also manifest themselves in improved financial and social well-being. Energy efficiency increases, there are lower emissions, the local economy is enhanced and self-sufficiency increases." (http://www.sitra.fi/en/ecology/resource-wisdom) You can read more about the idea on Sitra's homepage http://www.sitra.fi/sites/default/files/u753/resource_wisdom.pdf.

Sitra is also promoting the application of One Planet Living, which is originally a British idea of ten principles aimed at enhancing ecology, reducing carbon emissions and waste, favouring local food and raw materials and the preservation of biodiversity, among other things. The idea is being applied for the first time in Finland to the planning of the residential areas of Kivistö in Vantaa and Kangas in Jyväskylä. The areas will be constructed sustainable and to adopt comfortable, inexpensive and easy resource-wise living. The construction companies Skanska, NCC, YIT and major supermarket chains Kesko Food and HOK-Elanto are Sitra's partners in the projects.

Sitra is promoting resource wisdom in many different programs aimed at for example, carbon neutrality (http://www.sitra.fi/en/artikkelit/resource-wisdom/towards-carbon-neutrality), zero-waste (http://www.sitra.fi/en/artikkelit/resource-wisdom/zero-waste) and resource-wise lifestyle in households of the future (http://www.sitra.fi/en/projects/household-future). The European Commission is also allocating funds via an instrument called LIFE to Sitra and local authorities in Finland with new opportunities to launch major projects to improve resource efficiency (http://www.sitra.fi/en/news/resource-wisdom/eu-funding-finnish-resource-wisdom).
